You've picked your Gladiator. You know which pickup truck it's going on. The bit that catches people out isn't the camper at all — it's what happens to the truck underneath it.
A demountable camper doesn't just sit in the load bed and wait quietly. Even the lightest model in the range adds a genuine, constant weight over the rear axle, and that changes how the truck rides, brakes and corners. None of this makes a demountable camper unsafe or impractical — the tie-down system is engineered with serious headroom built in — but getting the suspension sorted properly is the one job worth taking seriously before your first trip, not after.
There isn't one right way to do it. Three of our customers took three different routes — one did it himself, one used a specialist fitter, one went through a dealer mechanic — and all three ended up in the same place: a truck that handles properly with the weight on board. Which route suits you depends on how hands-on you want to be, what you're comfortable spending, and how quickly you want it sorted.
A pickup truck is built to carry weight, but "rated to carry it" and "handles nicely while carrying it" are two different things. Adding a demountable camper to the load bed shifts the truck's centre of gravity backwards and upwards. Left unaddressed, that shows up as a softer, wallowier ride, more body roll in corners, and a rear end that sits noticeably lower than the front.
None of that is dangerous on its own — pickup trucks are engineered for exactly this kind of load — but it's not how you want a three-tonne combination of truck and camper to feel on a single-track Highland road at dusk. Up-rated rear leaf springs, air-assisted suspension ("airbags"), and a slightly harder-wearing tyre all address the same problem: putting the truck's handling back to where it was before the weight went on, rather than just tolerating it.
If you start reading up on this yourself, you'll run into a unit called the daN — the decaNewton — used to rate tie-down points and strap capacity. It sounds technical because it is, but the number itself is simple: one daN is roughly one kilogram of force. So when a bed anchor point is rated at 500 daN, that's approximately 500 kg of pulling force before it's under real strain — and the tie-down system on a Gladiator is engineered with several times that capacity relative to the camper's actual weight. You don't need to do the maths yourself; you just need to know the numbers are generous, not marginal.
Rob's Navara is a bit of an outlier — it runs coil springs at the rear rather than the leaf springs you'll find on most pickups, which is worth knowing if you're weighing up parts for the same truck.
He'd been going back and forth on whether to upgrade the rear springs and shocks when the decision got made for him: one of the rear coils broke. The dealer he bought the truck from replaced the springs and shocks under warranty, and Rob paid the difference to upgrade to a proper kit — a Pedders setup, around £450 for parts alone, without fitting.
On top of that, he fitted a MAD air helper kit himself. In theory it's a solid addition on top of uprated springs — in practice, his has developed a leak, which he puts down to his own fitting rather than the kit itself. His honest read: if you're more experienced than he was, or you get someone in to fit it, it should be fine. As it stands, the uprated springs alone are doing enough for a relatively lightweight camper, so the leak hasn't been a real problem — just an annoyance.
All in, Rob reckons around £750 in parts, and probably a similar amount again in labour if you paid someone to do the whole job rather than doing any of it yourself.
The lesson from Rob's experience isn't "don't do it yourself" — it's that the parts most likely to go wrong with a DIY fit are the ones needing an airtight seal, not the mechanical bolt-on components. If you're confident with spanners but less sure about air lines, that's worth factoring into which bits you tackle yourself and which you hand off.
With all that in mind, though, we always recommend getting the work done by a professional.
Martin had eyebolts fitted into the chassis and airbags added by Nolan, a specialist based in Pembrokeshire — split across an afternoon for the eyebolts and the following morning for the airbags. Nolan loans customers a car while the work's being done, so instead of sitting in a waiting room, Martin got to spend the wait exploring Pembrokeshire.
This is the middle path: someone who knows pickup trucks and demountable campers specifically, rather than a generalist. It tends to suit owners who want the job done right first time without necessarily doing it themselves, and who'd rather ask a specialist's opinion on the finer points — like whether eyebolts are worth adding to strengthen the anchor points on a truck where the standard bed anchors are bolted rather than welded to the chassis, which is exactly the extra step Martin had done. A specialist fit also tends to take the work out of your hands entirely — book it in, and by the next day it's done.
Yvonne and Paul had their airbag suspension fitted by Darkside Developments — a VAG specialist (VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda) based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, who run a dedicated Overland range alongside their day-to-day servicing work. Given their specialism, and Yvonne and Paul's intention to travel to the arctic circle, then down through Africa, that Darkside were a great choice for them.
For some owners, the natural choice is wherever they already trust their vehicle to be serviced, or a marque specialist who happens to also do overland prep as part of a wider business. A dealer or marque specialist won't necessarily have fitted a demountable camper before, but a competent one can absolutely fit an airbag kit correctly, and there's something to be said for keeping the work with someone who already knows your specific vehicle's history.
Regardless of which route you take, the same short list applies to most owners:
None of this is compulsory to legally use a demountable camper, but doing the rear suspension is always recommended. It's the difference between a truck that copes with the weight and one that's genuinely pleasant to drive with it on board — and the honest answer is that most owners who skip it end up doing it eighteen months later anyway, once the softer ride starts to grate.
